Comments from a recent guest: On a recent cruise to the Eastern Caribbean, we spent a day exploring Old San Juan, Puerto Rico. This turned out to be a major highlight of our vacation. In my opinion, Puerto Rico should be a "must visit" place for students of history, photographers, artists and shoppers! Old San Juan is simply amazing! 500 years of Western Hemisphere history in a five square mile area! Stunning! The highlight of our visit to Puerto Rico was the San Juan National Historic Site. This UNESCO World Heritage site is informally know as the "Gibraltar of the Caribbean," and consists of two major forts (San Felipe del Morro and San Cristóbal) and several other minor historic sites. We spent about three hours exploring San Felipe del Morro. The fort is beautiful and utterly fascinating. I was particularly impressed with the design, construction and uses of the fort. It is huge and extremely well built. The fort was made for war and to defend Puerto Rico and the rest of Spain's colonies in the Caribbean. To that purpose, El Morro was very successful for several hundred years. As an active military outpost, one can only imagine how easy it would have been to defend the city and port of San Juan, while at the same time making life as easy (maybe even comfortable) for the officers and men stationed there. For example, I found it interesting how the builders constructed various areas of the fort to maximize air flow off the ocean thereby cooling much of the fort's buildings. The San Juan National Historic Site includes a fort called San Cristóbal. We did not visit this site. If you are on limited time, definitely choose El Morro first. I suggest giving yourself three to four hours to see the fort and grounds. Definitely bring a hat, sunglasses and some water. The Caribbean sun can be brutal. The San Juan National Historic Site is perfect for people of all ages and is generally easy to walk around. Its a great educational opportunity for young and old. There is Very little street parking in Old San Juan. From the airport you'll need to take a cab at $30. After that Uber or public transportation is your best bet. If you do rent a car, you'll need to park in a lot or a garage. A nearby garage is La Cochera at 207 Calle San Francisco, San Juan, 00901.

Old San Juan , PR , Commonwealth of Puerto Rico

Old San Juan is one of the best places to visit in Puerto Rico. Old San Juan has an incredible 500 years of history, beautiful colonial architecture liberally splashed with tropical colors and timeless magic that makes it one of the most enchanting destinations in the Caribbean. You could spend many happy hours just walking around the walled city.

Perhaps nothing captures the history of Puerto Rico more than Old San Juan's massive fortresses. El Morro and Castillo de San Cristobal are among the most visited attractions on the island for a good reason. Their cannons, ramparts, and layered defenses have guarded the walled city for centuries. Even the governor's mansion, La Fortaleza, is called "The Fortress" because it was one of the settlement's early defensive structures.

Paseo La Princesa is a broad promenade that stretches from near the docks at the foot of the city and leads to the lovely Raíces Fountain. On weekends, you're likely to find all kinds of stalls lining the road, and maybe even a free cultural performance to enjoy. Paseo La Princesa hugs the old perimeter wall of the city, and beyond the fountain continues around Old San Juan to the San Juan Gate, the only remaining of five entry points into the old town.

The best time to enjoy the walk is during sunset when you'll have gorgeous views of the bay from the fountain, and you'll escape the heat of the day.
